Georganna Hancock claims she was born with a pencil in her mouth, instead of a silver spoon or a silver tongue. This amazing event occurred in Dayton, Ohio, in 1943. Her family thought she was bound to become an artist like her uncle Jim, but what she really wanted to do was to write. Poetry, stories, novels flowed from brain to pencil, and it was all drivel.
Fortunately, she discovered journalism and forged a career in nonfiction, winning awards from the National Federation of Press Women. She wrote for small newspapers and eventually The Miami Herald, then struck out to freelance to magazines including Bon Apetit, Redbook, Family Circle, Highlights, Offshore and many more national and regional publications. She reviewed books for the Louisville Courier-Journal in the 1980s as a member of the National Book Critics Circle.
After more than four decades in publishing, Georganna devotes herself to helping other writers along the path to successful publication. She provides editorial services, evaluates manuscripts and advises beginners, occasionally teaching classes. She blogs almost daily in A Writer's Edge and maintains a website by that name. Her book reviews appear online and for sale on Amazon. Active on Twitter as @GLHancock, she is poised to plunge into Facebook soon.
